Mesodyne Announces Seed Funding to Commercialize the LightCell: Nor’easter Ventures Leads Round of MIT Startup Delivering Long-Endurance Quiet Power to the US Military

Mesodyne Inc., the developer of solid-state portable power generators for small unmanned autonomous vehicles and mobile platforms, announced the closing of a $1.75m seed financing led by Nor’easter Ventures. TechStars, Luminate , Capital Factory, and the co-founders of Razor's Edge participated in the financing. This seed financing complements more than $3.5m in non-dilutive funding that Mesodyne was previously awarded from NSF, DOE, ARMY, DARPA, Mass-Ventures and AFWERX.

The demand for portable power for defense applications increases as power-hungry communications platforms and unmanned vehicles become increasingly dependent on electricity. Mesodyne develops lightweight, portable power solutions which deliver tactical advantage for military missions.  The Mesodyne LightCell™ is designed to generate 10x more energy than lithium-ion batteries of equal weight and to provide reliable and silent power in the 50-5000 W range to autonomous systems and people operating in remote locations.

“Lightweight portable power has been a longstanding and elusive objective for defense planners. Internal combustion engines and lithium-ion batteries are wholly insufficient to meet the demands of the modern warfighter or small unmanned vehicles,” said Josh Wachman, Managing Partner of Nor’easter Ventures. “Via their engineering brilliance and entrepreneurial grit, the founders continue to advance performance and engage customers. We are delighted to fuel their seed round and help grow Mesodyne.”
