R&D engineer for combustion-driven systems at an energy startup

We are seeking a highly R&D Engineer to join our expanding team. You will be responsible for developing and optimizing combustors and heat exchangers for Mesodyne's LightCell technology, and will help transitioning from prototypes to manufacturable products.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new high temperature, low flow rate liquid-fueled combustors, including fuel injectors, fuel/air mixers, flame stabilizers, etc.
  • Develop high temperature heat exchangers and other components/subsystems of the LightCell.
  • Own development from design through integration, testing, and optimization, including building and testing prototypes.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to build prototypes for deployment in government and commercial pilot projects.
  • Transition from prototypes to robust, scalable, and manufacturable designs.

Qualifications and skills:

  • BS or MS/MEng in mechanical engineering with relevant experience is required. A PhD in a relevant field is desirable but not required.
  • A deep intuitive and theoretical understanding of heat transfer, fluids, and/or combustion is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and test physical prototypes is required. Strong CAD design skills are required and machine shop experience (mill and lathe) are especially valuable.
  • Experience with programming, preferably in Python, for data analysis and modeling is required.
  • Experience with CFD is desirable, though this position is primarily experimental.
